Mechanical television was eclipsed by the higher quality of electronic television, a technology based on the cathode-ray picture tube.

After inventors demonstrated the practicality of electronic television, its development in the USA was taken over by large corporations involved in radio manufacturing and radio broadcasting. The corporate lab replaced the independent innovator.

The Second World War interrupted the marketing of television, although broadcasting continued in a number of American cities.
