2. MECHANICAL TELEVISION

LISTEN TO GUIDED AUDIO TOUR

The successful introduction of radio after the First World War spurred inventors to devise a similar medium that transmitted both sound and moving pictures.

Researchers first concentrated on electrically based mechanical television, which used a light source and spinning, perforated scanning disks to create an image – a system very different from the electronic television we know today.

The social impact of television at this time was extremely small, with only a few receivers in operation.
